10" Alchemy MX | Subwoofer Free Air
10" Alchemy MX | Subwoofer Free Air
Award-Winning Subwoofers, Tuned for Free-Air — Hand-Built in Huntley, IL
Not every build has room for a box — and not every build needs one. The Alchemy MX Free-Air takes everything that makes the MX legendary and re-tunes it for infinite baffle and vented applications. Mount it in your trunk wall, rear deck, or a custom baffle and let it breathe. No enclosure. No compromises. Just clean, deep bass that fills your cabin naturally.
What Is Free-Air?
A free-air (infinite baffle) subwoofer is designed to play without a traditional sealed or ported box. Instead, it uses the trunk or cargo area of your vehicle as its rear air volume. The result is smooth, natural-sounding bass with less weight, less bulk, and more usable space in your vehicle. If you want serious low end without sacrificing your entire trunk, free-air is the way to go.
Specifically Tuned for Open-Air Performance
This isn't just a standard MX without a box recommendation — it's a purpose-built free-air subwoofer. The suspension and motor parameters have been specifically tuned for higher Qts values, which means the driver controls its own cone movement without relying on the air pressure inside a sealed enclosure. The result is smooth, controlled bass response in free-air and vented applications where a standard sub would sound loose and undefined.
Unitized Aluminum Cone Technology
This isn't just an aluminum cone bolted to a voice coil — it's a unitized structure where the cone and voice coil are fused into a single integrated assembly. The coil is bonded to a thermally-conductive former that's actually part of the aluminum cone itself, creating a direct heat path from the voice coil straight into the heat-sinking alloy cone. Heat doesn't get trapped — it gets pulled out. The result is dramatically higher power capacity, lower distortion, and longer life than conventional designs.
The cone itself is a curvilinear shape — not a standard straight-sided cone. The curved profile is inherently more rigid across all axes, with a reinforcing rib at the rim for extra strength. No cone flexing, no breakup, no harsh distortion — just clean, accurate bass at any volume.
To take it even further, the aluminum alloy is electrochemically strengthened with a hard sandwich of aluminum oxide ceramic. This constrained-layer construction makes the cone significantly more rigid than competitive designs, while also providing permanently anodized colors that are bright, weatherproof, and scratch-resistant.
Ferrofluidic Motor Structure
Distortion kills clarity. The Alchemy MX Free-Air uses a Ferrofluid-cooled motor assembly that keeps the voice coil running cool while virtually eliminating harmonic distortion. The result is bass that stays clean and controlled, even during long listening sessions at high output.
Aero-Vented Cast Alloy Frame
The cast alloy frame provides a rock-solid foundation that eliminates unwanted resonance, while Alumapro's proprietary aero-venting channels airflow beneath the spider to reduce turbulence noise. In a free-air install where the back of the sub is exposed to the trunk space, proper venting is critical — the MX frame is designed for exactly this kind of open-air environment.
Santoprene Rubber Surround
The high-roll Santoprene surround delivers smooth, linear excursion across a wide temperature range. Whether it's a freezing Chicago winter or a summer road trip, this surround performs consistently — delivering reliable bass and long-term durability season after season.
Laminated Nomex Suspension
The dual-layer Nomex spider keeps the cone centered with precision, maintaining linear movement even at high excursion levels. In a free-air setup where there's no enclosure air spring to help control the cone, a well-engineered suspension system is everything — and the MX gets it right.
